Leaning liberal?
Topics:

I'm not certain, but it seems that I'm finding the liberal parties to be less foul-tasting than the conservative ones, recently. This is still kind of shocking, because I have a lot more in common with the conservatives, or at least a certain subset of them. I've said for a while that greens and libertarians are the modern counterparts to, respectively, liberals and conservatives. If that's true, maybe I'm a modern moderate. I'm not sure if I want to think of myself as a moderate of any kind -- generally I think that moderation is a sign that someone hasn't studied the issues enough to have an opinion.. but what happens when their opinions cut across traditional borders? That's what happens to be pretty often. It might be better then, to say that my positions don't have a party that expresses them. They're still not moderate.

What got me thinking along these lines was yet another embarassing scandal on the right. Trent Lott indicated that he wished that Strom Thurmond had been elected back in the 40s. Strom, like Billy Graham, is (was?) a racist, and would've aided segregationist efforts if he had been elected. Interestingly, Strom was a southern democrat back then, and as the parties shifted positions, he naturally became a republican. I'd like to learn more about the history of american political parties -- I wonder if this kind of thing was common, or if it's only strom's long life in politics that shows this kind of realignment. It's amazing to me that so many people still have deep respect for Strom and Graham.. I'd love to acquire the clips of the relevealment of their racist tendencies, and spread them around as much as possible. Of course, with Strom, it was blatant (and acceptable, back then), and Graham just was caught by accident. Who knows how many politicians today have these kind of opinions behind closed doors, in their rotary clubs, private hunting lodges, and other hidden social institutions.. Glass ceilings need to be shattered.

Pay attention to those who dance on the razor's edge of acceptability, who have to issue false apologies every week. They are married, like all politicians, to the mainstream, but to get an extra edge, they commit adultery with those outside the boundaries of normal society. Jealous? You should be. Cheaters reveal their dissatisfaction with their victims in the act of cheating.
